Portable Music Players and Devices
Portable music players and devices are
capable of storing many types of music files, and playing music at near-CD
quality. The
music files that are stored on these players can be deleted and new ones
transferred to them in just minutes.
Used with Rhapsody and a portable device, you can take your music with
you wherever you go.
Rhapsody can transfer
local
(computer resources such as drives or files that are part of a computer, or available on a Local Area Network; music files located on your computer's hard drive(s) are referred to as "local")
music files to a variety of compatible
portable music players and storage devices, including iPods
and PlaysForSure devices. With the appropriate
membership and a compatible
portable device, you can even transfer downloaded
Rhapsody tracks without purchasing them.
Rhapsody
MP3 Players, such as the Sansa e200R
Rhapsody, are portable devices designed specially to work with Rhapsody.
With a Rhapsody MP3 Player and a Rhapsody To Go membership,
you can transfer downloaded Rhapsody tracks and
Rhapsody
Channels, rate tracks on your device and transfer the ratings back
to Rhapsody, and even mark tracks on your device to add to your Purchase
Bin (
) in
the Sources area to buy whenever you feel
like it.
When you connect a portable
device to your computer while Rhapsody is running, a portable device icon
(
), along with the portable device name, will appear in
the Sources area. Click the portable device name to open the portable
device view of the Display area, where you can set your portable device
options, manage the tracks on your device, play music, and more.
You can have up to three (3) authorized portable devices at any given
time.
Click a header to learn more about portable devices.
You can transfer
a mix of formats
(encoding and compression formats for files; for example, MP3, RA, AAC),
file types (for example, MP3
(MPEG Layer 3 Audio; a popular open-standard compression and file format for digital audio),
RA
(RealNetworks' audio format),
RAX
(Secure RealAudio format),
AAC
(Advanced Audio Coding MPEG Layer 4 Audio: the newest generation of open-standard audio compression)),
and qualities (such as 96 kilobits per second [Kbps], or 196 Kbps) to
your portable player or device. Rhapsody will automatically try to convert
incompatible files into a format that your portable device can use. File
conversion preferences are selected with the Configure
Device or Change Options
commands, depending on the device installed, but will only be used if
your device does not support the original file format.
Which Track Types Can Be Transferred?
A number of different track types can
be transferred to your portable player.

Streamed Rhapsody tracks

|
Streamed (process of breaking a large audio or video file into smaller pieces and transferring it, piece by piece, so it can be viewed immediately rather than waiting for the whole file to be downloaded)
Rhapsody tracks cannot be transferred to a portable
player or device unless they are downloaded,
and they cannot be burned to a CD unless they are purchased.
If you drag streamed Rhapsody tracks to
your portable
device name in the Sources area ( ) for manual transfer,
the "Purchase" dialog will open; or, with a Rhapsody To Go membership and a compatible
portable device, the tracks will automatically be downloaded
without purchase and transferred.

|
Downloaded Rhapsody tracks

|
When you download Rhapsody tracks (on Windows XP or
later), you are granted the rights to
use the tracks with Rhapsody, whether
you are signed in to your Rhapsody account or not.
With the appropriate membership, you can transfer
downloaded Rhapsody tracks to
a supported portable device and play them. (Supported
devices must be PlaysForSure compatible.)
Not all downloaded Rhapsody tracks can be transferred to a portable player
or device. Some artists and labels have not granted subscription transfer
rights to their tracks. If you attempt to transfer a downloaded Rhapsody
track that does not have transfer rights, the "Purchase" dialog
will open.

|
Purchased tracks

|
Purchased tracks (from Rhapsody or RealPlayer) can be transferred to any device that supports RA (RealNetworks' audio format),
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding MPEG Layer 4 Audio: the newest generation of open-standard audio compression),
MP3 (MPEG Layer 3 Audio; a popular open-standard compression and file format for digital audio),
or WMA (Windows Media audio file: Microsoft Windows proprietary audio format)
formats or burned to a CD.

|
Purchased MP3 tracks
|
Purchased Rhapsody MP3 files can be transferred to any device that supports RA,
AAC, MP3, or WMA formats.

Local tracks
|
Local (computer resources such as drives or files that are part of a computer, or available on a Local Area Network; music files located on your computer's hard drive(s) are referred to as "local")
files that have been imported from a CD
or downloaded from the internet and saved to
your hard drive(s) can be transferred to any device that supports RA,
AAC, MP3, or WMA formats.
Imported CD tracks are automatically added to My
Library as local tracks. Non-Rhapsody downloads must be added
to My Library using the Rhapsody
File menu.

|
Rhapsody Channels
|
With a Rhapsody MP3 Player and
a Rhapsody to Go membership, you can
transfer Rhapsody Channels to your portable
device.
|

Tracks
that can be transferred without cost are marked in the Transfer column
of My Library.

files.

Subscription
|
You can transfer MP3, WMA, and AAC files, and purchased
and downloaded Rhapsody tracks to your device. Streamed Rhapsody tracks
will become downloaded Rhapsody tracks during transfer.
You cannot transfer Rhapsody channels,
unless your subscription device is a Rhapsody MP3 Player.
|
|
Rhapsody MP3 Players
|
You can transfer MP3, WMA, and AAC files, plus
purchased and downloaded Rhapsody tracks to your Rhapsody
MP3 Player. Streamed Rhapsody tracks will become downloaded Rhapsody
tracks during transfer. You can transfer Rhapsody
Channels.
A transferred
Rhapsody Channel consists of more than three hours of music fitting that
Channel's description. Every time you connect your Rhapsody MP3 Player
to your computer while signed in to your Rhapsody account, your Channels
will be updated with fresh tracks.
|
|
Any device with the word "subscription" next to it is PlaysForSure
compatible. These and Rhapsody MP3 Players are the only portable players
to which you can transfer downloaded Rhapsody tracks. But keep checking
the list; Rhapsody is adding more devices all the time.
Tip: Right-click your portable device in the Sources area to see what right-click options are available to you.
