CD Burning
With Rhapsody and some blank discs ( or ),
you can create custom audio CDs that can be played on standard CD players.
Because most of the music in the Music Guide
can be purchased and burned, you have a huge variety of tracks to choose
from. You can also import tracks from your
favorite commercial CDs, remix them into playlists,
and burn them. With Rhapsody and some creative mixing, every CD you make
can be a top 20 (or so) of your all-time favorite songs - an average CD-R
will hold 80 minutes of music.

How do I burn a CD?
|
|
- Tracks
that you have purchased from Rhapsody's Music
Guide.
- Downloaded
Rhapsody tracks, if you choose to purchase them. (You can add streamed
(process of breaking a large audio or video file into smaller pieces and transferring it, piece by piece, so it can be viewed immediately rather than waiting for the whole file to be downloaded)
and downloaded Rhapsody tracks to the Burn
list. When you start your burn, you will be prompted to purchase the
tracks if they are available.)
- Tracks
that you have imported from CDs.
- Local
(computer resources such as drives or files that are part of a computer, or available on a Local Area Network; music files located on your computer's hard drive(s) are referred to as "local") tracks
that you have added from
your hard drive(s) to My Library.
- Entire
playlists, if all the tracks in the playlist
are local
and/or available for purchase.
|
Tracks
that you can burn without cost are marked "OK" in the Burn Rights column of My Library.
|
- Media
that is only streamed to your computer, such as Rhapsody
Channels and other internet
radio.
- A few
Rhapsody tracks are only available as streams, and are labeled Stream
Only in the Music Guide. If a
track is not available for purchase, you will receive a message to that
effect when you start your burn.
- If a track or album displays an active Buy
button next to it, it can be purchased and burned to CD.
- If a track displays a grayed-out Buy
button next to it, it cannot be purchased and burned to CD.
Look at the Burn column next
to any track in My Library:
- OK: You
can burn the track without purchase.
- With Purchase:
You can burn the track, but it must be purchased first.
- Unavailable:
The track cannot be burned to CD.
Rhapsody can access all the compatible
CD drives installed on your computer. Whenever you insert a prerecorded
CD and Rhapsody is running, a CD icon (
) and the name
of the CD (if available) will appear in the
Sources area. Click the CD icon to view the contents of the CD in
the Display area (below).
From the CD view of the Display area, you can:
- Play CD tracks from a prerecorded
CD.
- Import
tracks from a prerecorded CD to My Library.
- Retrieve CD information for a
prerecorded CD.
- Edit the CD information for a
prerecorded CD, or a CD that you burn.
- Eject the CD from your CD drive.
Viewing CD Contents
|
In your CD Importing
and Playback Preferences, you can set Rhapsody to automatically display
the contents of a CD as soon as it is inserted. If that preference is
not selected, click the CD icon ( ) in the Sources
area (left) to display a CD's contents. All CD drives that contain
an audio CD appear in the Sources area.
If your CD drive is equipped with a CD
burner, you can create your own music CDs.
If you have more than one CD burner on your computer, you can choose your
default burner in CD
Burning Preferences.

The Transfer column will only be visible when you have a
portable device connected to your computer.
You can use CD-RWs (a type of disc that can be written to in multiple
sessions, or erased and rewritten) to burn CDs with Rhapsody. However,
you should be aware that not all CD players can read and play CD-RWs.
The CD burning process with a CD-RW is very similar to the process with
a CD-R (recordable disks that can be recorded only once).
- Burning tracks onto a blank CD-RW follows the
same process as burning tracks onto a CD-R.
- To burn tracks onto a CD-RW that already has content
on it, follow the steps below:
- Insert the CD-RW into your CD drive.
- Click
Burn
a CD in the Sources area. The current
contents of the CD-RW will appear in the Display
area.
- Click
Erase Disc at the top of the Display area to erase the contents
of the CD-RW.
- Once the erasing process
is finished, add tracks to the blank CD-RW and follow the CD burning process
as usual.
|
You cannot
burn more music onto a CD-RW that already has content on it. You
will always need to erase a CD-RW before you can burn music onto it using
Rhapsody.
|
The CD or CD/DVD burner you already have
is probably compatible with Rhapsody. Rhapsody uses CD burning technology
that works with thousands of different CD burners.
However, there are many variables involved
in CD burning. While Rhapsody cannot guarantee that CD burning will work
on your system, you can check a list of drives
that are compatible with Rhapsody's burning software.
There are many issues that can cause a
burn to go wrong, but there are also many things you can do to avoid some
of the most common problems. Below are suggestions for helping you create
a perfect disc every time.
- Use high-quality,
name-brand discs. These discs are usually less flawed and have a higher
success rate than no-name, cheaper discs.
- Ensure that media
is clean and free of any scratches before attempting a burn. Frequent
handling of discs can cause scratches and dirt to accumulate on the disc
surface. Scratches and dirt can cause a burn to fail.
- Do not attempt to
run a large number of applications during a burn. Depending on the speed
and memory of your computer, running many applications at once can cause
data to be lost during the burn process.
- If you are having
trouble playing audio CDs burned with Rhapsody in your CD player, try
lowering your write speed in the CD Burning
preferences to help reduce buffer underrun
Every CD recorder temporarily stores data during recording, acting as a buffer against slowdowns in the data stream from the computer to the recorder. Buffer underruns occur when the buffer empties completely, causing skips or gaps in your recording. issues. Even drives with buffer underrun protection do not
stop buffer underruns from occurring; they only avoid failure during a
burn by linking information across small gaps on the disc. If too many
buffer underruns occur, the disc can become unreadable to a standard CD
player.
- Purchase the proper
discs for your drive; make sure the media is rated for your drive speed.
Most lower-speed drives do not write well to newer, high-speed media even
though the high-speed media states it is also rated for lower speeds (such
as 4x).
- Store your discs
appropriately. Do not store discs in a bright or hot environment. Heat
and ultraviolet light from direct sunlight or high-intensity fluorescent
bulbs are detrimental to the dye used in the disks.
- If some tracks will
not fit on the CD, try reordering the list of tracks to get your preferred
tracks to fit. Space on the disc is assigned from the top down in the
list of tracks to burn. Reorder tracks by dragging them into a new order.
- If you continue to
get errors while burning, and you are using quality media that is appropriate
for your drive, try reducing your write speed in the CD
Burning preferences.
- After you have burned
a CD using Rhapsody, you cannot add more tracks to it. As a part of the
CD burn process, Rhapsody finalizes every CD burning session. Finalizing
the CD session closes the CD, preventing additional tracks from being
burned to the CD. In addition, finalizing also ensures that the CD will
be playable on most CD players that can play CD-R
CD-Recordable. The term can refer to a recording drive on your computer, or the recordable disks used with the drive. CD-R disks can be recorded only once. discs.
- When burning CDs,
you can make up to seven (7) copies
of any specific playlist. When you have created
a CD using Rhapsody, you can copy it; however, the same legal restrictions
apply to CDs burned using Rhapsody as to any music CD you purchase at
a retail store. CDs burned using our service may be copied solely for
personal use of the subscriber. You may not make copies for others.
